Eurovision 2013 Buddy Points

Since a few years, I have been doing a non rigorous study about an alleged adulteration of the Eurovision Song Contest for the feedback between neighboring countries or of their influence.

At this time I think I can prove that this was not true, at least in regards to the winning songs or the podium.

Methodology:

First of all, remove all the participants' votes of neighbor countries. So, in this way, for example, in the edition of 2013, for Spain, we should remove the votes of France. This standard is severely damaging many neighboring countries such as Serbia, Hungary, Russia or Ukraine.

All this is not enough, it also criticized the countries of the former Yugoslavia were voted among them, so that in the same way as with neighboring countries, are also deleted the votes of the countries that were part of an unit recently (we will not go back to the Middle Ages right?). Thus, in Ukraine, in the edition of 2013, we should remove the votes from Moldova, Romania, Russia, Belarus and Hungary because of being bordering countries, and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan because of been part of the USSR. In the same way, it would be applied to the countries of the former Yugoslavia which with the former members of the USSR are the most  countries by this rule.

Finally, and perhaps in this standard is to which I have devoted less time, since my knowledge on migratory movements are quite meager, eliminating the votes of the countries with high immigration the country voted. For example, Turkey will be taken away the votes of Germany or Romania the votes from Spain.

The classification obtained is not an objective classification, just experiment to demonstrate that for me baptized as "Points of colegueo"/"Buddy points", while having an influence on the positions of middle and end of the table, rarely influence the results of the podium Festival.

I leave here the classifications obtained for 2013

Conclusions

In blue the affected countries, in red benefited.

This year had changed the podium, since Ukraine is among the countries most affected by the rule colegueo"/"buddy" to fourth for Norway.

In any case, not a matter of drawing conclusions dear reader, this is simply the result of a night of boredom but if you want to get them please note that this blog is called "Trapallada" that is a galician word for "botched job".

  1. Very interesting (as I'm thinking about ESC being more political than it should be). And not too bad for a night boredom ;)

But maybe it's unfair to simply delete all the points given by neighbour- and former fellow-block-countries. Maybe they had voted anyway for that country.

And what this kind of calculation can not do is, adding the missing points... If we take my country Germany: We gave 10 points to Denmark, which is a neighbour. So if we wouldn't be allowed to vote for DEN these 10 points would go to Iceland (who in reality got 8 from us). So all other countries would move up, too, in our ranking. Finland would get not 1 but 2 points. And the country that GER voted on 11th place should get 1 point (except it was a neighbour...). But we'll never know who it was.

    Keep on being bored :)
    Cheers from GER!

  2. I did not want to do a comprehensive study on the voting, I just wanted to show that the final result in the top positions does not change if we subtract the 'buddy points', and it's very dificult that it changes because winners usually take a great advantage
